Aftercare took longer than the scene.
That was one of Rowan's rules.
He ran a warm bath and tested the water with his wrist. He removed the collar, cleaned every mark, and inspected your wrists in the bright bathroom light. He offered water before you asked and held the glass when your hands trembled. A plate appeared with apple slices, crackers, and the chocolate you kept hidden from the rest of the pack.
"Thief," you mumbled.
"Provider."
"You stole my emergency chocolate."
"I am the emergency."
You laughed weakly.
He watched your face. "Where are you?"
"Adult. Floaty."
"Any regret?"
You checked.
Your body felt used in the way you had wanted: heavy, tender, and thoroughly known. The wetting still pricked at your pride, but it did not feel like a violation. Rowan had followed the boundary exactly.
"No regret," you said. "A little embarrassed."
"Do you want reassurance, humor, or no discussion?"
"Reassurance."
He crouched beside the bath.
"Nothing your body did tonight disgusted me. Nothing made you less desirable, less adult, or less in control of your choices. You trusted me with something difficult. I know the difference between surrender and helplessness."
Your throat tightened.
"And last night?"
"Last night you were helpless in some ways. That's allowed too. It wasn't sexual, and it never will be. Both versions of care are real. Neither cancels the other."
You reached for his hand.
He laced your fingers together.
"Can we be done talking now?"
"Gladly. You ask exhausting questions."
"You asked most of them."
"Unprovable."
After the bath, Rowan remade the bed while you dressed in another one of his shirts. He stripped the damp linens without ceremony, wiped down the mattress cover, and put everything into the wash. His matter-of-fact care made the awkwardness ordinary.
When he returned, he was carrying your stuffed wolf.
"Do you want this, or would it feel wrong after the scene?"
The question touched something deep. He understood that objects could belong to one headspace without being contaminated by another, but he also understood that you got to decide.
"I want him," you said.
Rowan handed him over.
"Do you want me human or wolf?"
"Wolf."
He shifted beside the bed.
The transformation was slower when he was tired. Bones rolled beneath skin. His body expanded and folded, black fur spreading over him until an actual wolf stood in the lamplight. He was far larger than any natural animal, his shoulder nearly level with your chest, but there was nothing human in his silhouette.
He circled twice on the rug, sneezed at a pillow, and jumped onto the bed.
"Very dignified," you told him.
Rowan huffed.
You settled against his side with your fingers buried in the thick fur at his neck. He radiated heat. Beneath your palm, his heartbeat was slow and steady.
Downstairs, the lodge creaked with the movements of a crowded pack. Someone laughed in the kitchen. A cupboard closed. The three newcomers slept under your roof, injured but free. Outside, the river was already beginning to fall.
"We have to decide what happens to Ash and the others," you said.
One dark ear turned toward you.
"Tomorrow," you amended.
Rowan placed one enormous paw over your ankle.
"Bossy."
His tail thumped once.
You fell asleep smiling.
