The rescue party returned after dark.
Lila arrived on a makeshift stretcher, furious about it. Caleb limped beside her with Micah's arm around his waist. Rowan came last, carrying the heaviest pack and bleeding from a cut along his ribs.
You met him in the mudroom.
"June," you called.
"It's shallow," Rowan said.
"June."
"Already here." The healer shoved past you. "Shirt off, Alpha."
"Lila needs—"
"Mara has Lila. Shirt. Off."
Rowan looked at you.
You lifted one eyebrow.
He took off his shirt.
The cut was long but clean. While June disinfected it, you stood close enough for Rowan's knee to rest against yours. He smelled of rain, blood, wet fur, and the sharp mineral scent of the landslide.
"Left at the cedar," he said.
"Told you."
"You did."
His hand found yours.
Later, after the injured had been settled and the lodge quieted, you returned to the map room together. The storm had weakened to a steady rain.
Rowan closed the door.
"You were right," he said.
"About the route?"
"About trust. I was trying to keep you safe this morning. I didn't notice that I was also trying to make you smaller than you were."
You leaned back against the table. "I was barely adult when I came downstairs."
"You were adult enough to tell me what you needed. I should have listened sooner."
"You did listen. Eventually."
"A glowing endorsement of my leadership."
You smiled. "Four stars."
"Cruel."
The smile faded as quickly as it came.
"I'm sorry for what I said," you told him. "About it being easy for you."
"You were hurting."
"That explains it. It doesn't make it fair."
He considered that, then nodded. "Apology accepted."
You touched the fresh bandage beneath his torn shirt. "Does Micah's arm still bother him?"
"In cold weather."
"Does he blame you?"
"He says no. I do enough for both of us."
You recognized the shape of that sentence.
"A pack isn't a collection of people who never need anything," you reminded him.
"Who said that? Sounds unbearably wise."
"Some bossy alpha."
Rowan stepped between your knees where you leaned against the table. His palms rested on either side of you, not touching yet.
"Where are you now?"
"Adult. Fully."
"Number?"
You checked inward. The small place was quiet, neither pulling you toward it nor threatening to open beneath your feet.
"One."
"And what do you need?"
The answer rose with surprising clarity.
"You. Not caregiver you." You held his gaze. "Mate. Alpha. Daddy, but the adult kind."
Heat moved through his expression, then stopped behind discipline.
"Last night was intense. Today was worse. Wanting closeness makes sense, but that doesn't mean a scene is the right way to get it."
"I know."
"I'm not refusing. I'm checking."
"Then check."
He did.
The two of you went upstairs and sat facing each other on the bed, still fully dressed. Rowan brought out the written checklist from the locked drawer in the nightstand. It named every activity the two of you had tried or discussed: rope, restraints, spanking, biting and marking, forced eye contact, praise and degradation, edging, rough sex, choking, oral attention, fingers, cock warming, breeding language, mating press, knotting, spitting, wetting, and watersports.
You went through it line by line.
Some received a yes. Some received a no. Choking became only his hand resting at your throat, with no pressure tonight. Wetting was a maybe, only if your body required it while you were knotted, and it would not be used to humiliate you. Breeding talk was allowed as fantasy. The restraints would be soft rope, wrists only, with safety shears on the nightstand. Yellow meant slow down. Red meant stop. Three taps meant the same if you could not speak.
"And if you feel small?" Rowan asked.
"Everything sexual stops immediately. You untie me, cover me, and ask whether I want space or caregiver mode."
"Good. Where are you now?"
"Adult. One."
"Tell me what you want in your own words."
You did.
Only then did he kiss you.
It began gently, almost chastely. His mouth moved over yours while his hands remained open at your waist. You could feel the question in every pause and answer it by leaning closer.
The second kiss had teeth in it.
Rowan caught the back of your neck and tilted your head, exposing the old mating mark at your shoulder. He kissed the scar first. Then he bit beside it, slowly enough that you felt the promise before the pain.
"Mine," he said against your skin.
"Yours."
"Say it like you mean it."
"I'm yours, Alpha."
His control frayed.
He undressed you without hurry, pausing whenever your breathing changed. The collar came next, padded leather buckled loosely enough for two fingers to fit beneath it. Rowan clipped no leash to it. Tonight the collar was not about being led. It was a wordless reminder that you had chosen where to kneel.
"Pretty puppy," he murmured.
The pet name settled differently now than it had the night before. Then, it had made you feel sheltered. Now it made warmth curl low in your body. Context mattered. Consent mattered. You were an adult woman choosing a game with the adult man you trusted.
Rowan bound your wrists in front of you with soft rope. He checked the tension, tested circulation, and made you repeat your safewords. Then he placed you over his lap.
The first strike was light.
"Color?"
"Green."
The second landed harder.
He made you count. When you lost the number, he teased you for it, his voice carrying the sharp edge of degradation you had requested. Every cruel word was paired with a touch that told the truth: his thumb stroking your hip, his palm soothing heat into your skin, his mouth pressing praise to the back of your shoulder.
Needy, he called you.
Greedy.
His beautiful, desperate girl.
His good puppy.
The contradictions pushed you toward the floating edge of subspace. Rowan kept you tethered with questions.
"Name?"
You gave it.
"Where are you?"
"Our room."
"How old are you?"
You answered clearly.
"Color?"
"Green. Please don't stop."
"That's my good girl."
He drew the rest of the scene out with wicked patience. He teased until asking became begging, then made you look at him while he decided whether you had earned what you wanted. His hand rested at your throat without squeezing. His mouth left love bites along your neck and collarbone. When embarrassment made you turn away, he caught your chin.
"Eyes on Daddy."
You looked.
"There she is."
What followed belonged to the private language you had built together: roughness measured against trust, praise tangled with filth, his restraint balancing your surrender. He used his mouth and hands with deliberate attention, brought you close, and denied you until your composure dissolved. He spat only after asking with his eyes and receiving your nod. He made every degrading word sound like worship.
When the ropes came off, he rubbed your wrists before changing positions. You settled over him and held still, warming him while the urgency sharpened between you. The size difference made even stillness feel demanding. Rowan kissed your damp cheeks and told you how beautifully you took him, how proud he was of the trust you gave him.
"Still green?"
"Green."
"Still adult?"
"Yes."
Only then did he turn you beneath him.
The mating press folded you close, his body surrounding yours without making you disappear. He used the breeding language you had approved, dark promises neither of you mistook for plans. He made you say what you wanted. He held your gaze when pleasure became overwhelming and praised you through each wave of it.
His bite landed beside the old mark as his knot began to swell.
The world narrowed to Rowan's weight held carefully above you, the bond between your bodies, and the rain tapping gently at the windows. He whispered mine. You answered yours. The words were not ownership. They were direction. Wherever fear scattered you, this was the way home.
Then his nostrils flared.
"Sweetheart," he said, voice gentling. "Your bladder."
Embarrassment crashed through the haze.
"I can wait."
"You don't have to. We planned for this."
An absorbent blanket covered the bed beneath you. You had put it there together before the scene. Planning did not erase the instinct to hide.
"It's different now," you whispered.
"Do you want me to help, or do you want to wait?"
The pressure was already painful. His knot kept you joined, making movement impossible for the moment.
"Help. But don't make it mean anything."
"It means your body needs relief. That's all."
He kissed your forehead and talked you through letting go. Warmth spread beneath you. Shame followed, hot and immediate, but Rowan gave it nowhere to root. He did not laugh or turn the moment into humiliation. He held you, called you brave, and reminded you that consent could be tender without becoming less intimate.
Relief pulled tears from your eyes.
"Good girl," he murmured. "I've got you."
The words broke the last of your defenses.
You cried against his shoulder while the knot slowly receded. Rowan stayed still until he could move without hurting you. Then he wrapped you in a clean blanket and carried you to the bathroom.
